Our faces have dominated our everyday lives since covid. It is time to show our skin a little more love now, especially considering it’s receiving so much attention. Think Zoom calls, social media posts, resume headshots, business cards, LinkedIn profiles, dating profiles, facial recognition software, you name it. Our faces are the focal point of who we are to the world.

Having healthy and glowing skin attracts opportunities to us!

In this post, we will discuss these ten home-based skincare tips and tricks from beauty experts that are designed to help you maintain and enhance your skincare regimen. There is also a bonus at the end: How-to instructions on massaging your face like a pro, because, let’s face it, not everyone has the time or money to visit their local esthetician multiple times per week.

Apply SPF Daily To Your Face

Sunlight delivers vital vitamins and nutrients, but experts say our face needs protection to maintain healthy, youthful skin. Let’s explore some reasons why wearing SPF daily is important for healthy skin.

First, it will help with reducing facial lines and wrinkles, which reduces aging too fast or premature aging. Most of us want to look a few years younger, or even a decade younger. These hacks will help us look like the younger version of ourselves.

Reason two: some claim wearing SPF daily will help protect against skin cancer. Although there can be some truth to this depending on the skin type, I would also make the argument that the products you use matter too. Just because the brand is well-known or expensive does not mean the product you are using will not expose your skin to skin cancer or other skin issues.

SPF (sunscreen protection for face) can be found in oil-free products, tinted moisturizers, makeup powders, and organic makeup products like Seytu Beauty. Most of us do not want an oily face so finding it in products you use will help reduce the oily feeling that comes from lotion.

In addition to SPF daily, another way to protect your skin when the SPF has worn off is with vitamin C. To protect and defend against everything coming into contact with your skin, vitamin C helps to increase immunity.

Taking vitamin C will also help protect your skin from the inside out.

Wash your face twice per day!

Even while it might seem easier to take a long shower than to wash your face before bed, don’t skip the step. This is because our faces are constantly exposed to microbes throughout the day. Thankfully, as Crown Jewel Esthetics owner Jewellee Williams puts it, “our skin is composed of many layers that act like a factory, both keeping bacteria and harmful substances out of the body while simultaneously excreting toxins out of the body.”

Experts advise washing your face twice at night: once to get rid of sunscreen and makeup with an oil-based cleanser, and again to remove any remaining residue with a regular cleanser.

Medical News Today agrees that baking soda is effective for acne treatment. Many natural beauty experts suggest mixing baking soda for extra exfoliation or a pea-sized amount of clay for deeper cleansing in your cleanser. To guarantee that the skin is being cleaned, exfoliate the skin two or three times every week.

Reduce inflammation the easy way

Many believe that splashing warm water on your face and skin will open our pores, allowing for increased absorption of cleansing products; however, this is a myth. Taking hot showers and washing our faces with warm or hot water damages our skin.

To reduce inflammation quickly and easily, try splashing cold water on your face. This also applies to taking a cold shower. Cold water helps to reduce toxins that are clogging up our pores. Cold water also stimulates our skin and activates blood flow, which improves the absorption of products.

Think about it: When you have an injury, you use an ice pack. Why? To lessen the inflammation that the injury had caused.

This is why some beauty experts suggest keeping beauty products like face masks, eye patches, lotions, moisturizers, and jade rollers cold in the refrigerator. (Do not forget to put them in the fridge!)

Blair says if you need to relieve some irritation around your eyes, apply cucumber slices cut thinly to your eyes for fifteen minutes. Cucumbers’ vitamin C content and moisturizing qualities can help to lighten and de-puff the affected region. An alternative would be to use potato slices to help de-puff and lighten the eyes.

Instead of cucumbers or potato slices, you can also opt to use green tea or chamomile tea bags. The presence of caffeine in these products causes blood vessels to constrict, which lowers inflammation and brightens the eyes.

No more picking!

Even if seeing online videos of puss extractions makes you want to remove your imperfections, resist the urge! At-home extractions have been shown to cause hyperpigmentation, inflammation, and long-term harm, according to our specialists. I recommend icing your imperfections instead.

Naturally fuller lips

Although fillers are a possibility, Blair at Kari Skin suggests plumping your lips at home with five drops of peppermint oil added to your favorite lip gloss. In addition, she suggests using petroleum-free products to keep lips hydrated and exfoliating damp lips twice a week with a dry washcloth.

Cool down your showers

Even if you adore long, hot showers and foamy soaps, this damages our skin. Hot showers reduce the natural thin layer of oil that is on our skin. Julie Featherman, owner of Juju Salon, advises preparing for shorter, cooler showers. Use a mild lotion-based cleanser, and apply deep-hydrating body oil or lotion right away. Additionally, while purchasing shower products, “look for key ingredients like calendula, shea butter, sunflower seed oil, and borage.”

Moisturize thoroughly

Although slugging, which originated on Reddit about 10 years ago, became an overnight popular TikTok skincare technique, it isn’t for everyone.

Slugging includes slathering the skin in a silicone-based product such as Aquafor, Vaseline, or Cerave; however, for those who do not like the feel of a thick moisturizer on their face, our experts provide alternative methods for hydrating and absorbing.

Estetician Williams advises utilizing serums with a high concentration to maintain the health and function of your skin cells. To address the different layers of skin, Adeline Koh, owner of Sabbatical Beauty, suggests following a multi-step program. Apply a Korean beauty regimen consisting of six steps, or just use a toner, oil, and moisturizer in that order. Koh states, “Think of it like a wardrobe. You can take the layers of hydration on and off as you would in different seasons, and they will keep skin hydrated and plump.”

Rescue Spa CEO Danuta Mieloch suggests using common household items like honey, coconut, or olive oil, which have natural antibacterial qualities and moisturizing humectants, to refresh your skin.

DIY homemade beauty remedies.

Who knew that your pantry could keep your belly and your skin satisfied. (Please note that some substances may not be suitable for your particular skin type.) Here are some examples of what to use from your pantry to add nutrients to your skin.

Weekly foot exfoliation service: Break up six to eight aspirins, then mix them with lemon juice. Add two tablespoons of honey and stir to make the mixture thick and jelly-like. Apply the mixture to your feet’s bottoms, being especially careful in the areas that are prone to calluses. After elevating your feet for ten to fifteen minutes, cover with a warm cloth and rinse. This foot exfoliation is a service that Juju Salon offers. Their clients enjoy it.

Monthly anti-aging skin routine: In a small bowl, combine two tablespoons plain Greek yogurt and one tablespoon raw honey to make. After applying, wait 10 to 15 minutes for the mask to dry on your face. Use mildly warm water to rinse. Owner of Skin House Shireen Mustafa uses yogurt and honey as an anti-aging DIY face mask to gently exfoliate aging skin, leaving you feeling soft, moisturized, and radiant.

Wake up your skin: Mix together a cup of pre-brewed coffee grounds, a quarter to a half cup of brown sugar, and a small amount of coconut or olive oil. Apply this combination all over your body, avoiding your face since this coarse product is too harsh for your face’s skin, just before turning off the water in the shower, and then rinse. The staff at Freedom Apothecary suggests using sugar, coffee grounds, and oil for a quick body scrub in the morning to help wake up your skin.

Blair recommends giving yourself a thorough facial wash before steaming your face for five minutes with a towel draped over your head over a kettle of boiling herbal tea. Next, use raw egg whites to paint your face after beating them together. For ten to fifteen minutes, rest your eyes with slices of cucumber. After giving your skin a warm water rinse, moisturize it.

Pay attention to what you eat as well

It is easy to forget in our busy lives that our skin is affected by both the things we put on, and the things we put into our bodies.

Williams warns us that “so much of our food is processed with hormones and preservatives.” “Everything you eat has an immediate impact on the health of your skin and the functioning of your cells.” She recommends cutting back on processed carbohydrates, dairy, alcohol, and trans and saturated fats to lower inflammation and enhance the general health of your skin.

Furthermore, our professionals stress the importance of maintaining enough water levels to support the body’s removal of toxins. According to Blair and Aires, installing a humidifier in a living area can change someone’s life. It will increase the air’s moisture content, which hydrates skin from the outside in.

Another simple technique to properly nourish your skin is to include collagen in your diet. The protein called collagen is what gives our skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints their structure. Fenlan states that “beyond the age of 25, our body’s production of collagen starts to diminish.” To easily incorporate collagen powder into your diet, the About Face Skin Care experts suggest mixing a scoop of flavorless powder into your coffee, smoothies, or water.

Bonus: Massage your face like a pro.

Face massages are an excellent method to promote blood flow and lymphatic drainage, which helps the body rid itself of impurities and enhance the flow of nutrients to essential organs, when you need a little extra glow and lift. Here’s a detailed how-to on how to do facial massages like a pro:

Step 1: Inhale

You can unwind for a moment. We carry a lot of strain on our necks due to the way we travel around the world (beginning at our phones, computers, tablets, etc.), which exacerbates the lymphatic congestion we encounter. When you take deep breaths, it sends a message to your brain to prepare your body for relaxation, so let’s relieve tension by taking three deep breaths before the massage begins.

Step 2: Apply facial oil

Apply warm oil with your hands to your entire face, extending down to your neck. Make sure you are gliding smoothly; if not, you risk pulling at the skin and causing harm.

Step 3: Massage below the earlobe

With your middle finger above and your index finger below the earlobe, your two fingers create a v-shape around your ear. To activate the lymph nodes, gently circularly massage the region. This will assist in getting rid of any stagnation. Do this seven to fifteen times. Additionally, this will support the stimulation of product absorption. (Remember to breathe throughout; this is a calming exercise.)

Step 4: Massage jawline and cheek

Bend your fingers at the knuckles and place them on your jawbone at your chin. Gently raise and slide your knuckles slowly up your jawline toward your ears, stopping just below your earlobe at the knuckle of your index finger. Repeat this massage three to five times. This will stimulate your glands and help define your jawline. Continue in the same manner, placing your cheekbone between your knuckles this time, and end by pointing your middle finger in the direction of your temple.

Step 5: Massage brow

The eyebrow has numerous acupressure points, therefore, it’s crucial to treat it with love. Move your knuckles over the area, concentrating on an upward motion, following your brow bone.

Step Six: Forehead massage

Move your fingers in a circular motion and gently pull upwards from the center of your forehead towards your temple. Massage the forehead while inhaling and exhaling in a relaxed manner.

Step 7: Neck massage

Take your hands and lightly pump each side of your neck five times, applying slight pressure.

Your skin will be so relaxed after this massage. Whichever products you choose to use will absorb more swiftly and efficiently. Some beauty experts suggest applying a facial moisturizer on top of the oil you used during the massage. This will help your skin glow and achieve the optimal results you seek.
